Time for a reset: Rebuilding trust in US-Europe relations

From the report
The relationship between the United States and Europe has long been a cornerstone of global security, economic prosperity and international cooperation. Built on shared interests and decades of partnership, the transatlantic alliance has played a vital role in maintaining stability around the world. However, growing political disagreements, trade disputes and uncertainty over military commitments have placed this relationship under increasing pressure. As tensions deepen, both sides must consider how to rebuild trust and protect their common interests in an increasingly unpredictable world.
Recent controversy surrounding US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has highlighted the growing divide. His remarks suggesting that European allies had not contributed sufficiently during the two-decade war in Afghanistan sparked criticism across Europe. By repeating a joke that portrayed the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) as meaning “I Saw Americans Fighting,” he appeared to dismiss the sacrifices made by America’s NATO partners.
European leaders responded by emphasizing that their armed forces had fought alongside American troops and suffered significant casualties. More than 1,100 non-American service members died during the conflict, many of them Europeans. Their sacrifices demonstrate that the alliance has always involved shared responsibilities and considerable human costs on both sides of the Atlantic.
