Iraqi lawmaker sentenced to six years in prison, ordered to repay nearly $20 million in oil contract corruption case

From the report
An Iraqi anti-corruption court has sentenced lawmaker Muthanna al-Samarrai to six years in prison and ordered him to repay nearly $20 million in illicit gains after finding that he exploited his parliamentary position to benefit from state oil contracts. The ruling represents a significant development in Iraq’s efforts to combat corruption involving public officials and the management of government resources.
Al-Samarrai, who leads the Sunni political bloc Azm Alliance, was convicted of using his political influence and parliamentary oversight responsibilities to obtain financial benefits through public works and procurement contracts involving Iraq’s state-owned North and South Refineries companies.
According to Iraq’s Federal Integrity Commission, the lawmaker played a direct role in awarding contracts and directing payments through four private companies associated with his network. The investigation examined how public procurement arrangements were allegedly manipulated to generate private financial gains at the expense of the state.
