The highly anticipated U.S. midterm elections are taking place today, Tuesday. Voters are casting ballots for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives (the lower chamber of Congress) and one-third—or 35 seats—in the Senate (the upper chamber). Polls suggest a strong possibility of a Democratic victory in the House, while the race for the Senate appears to be a tight contest between the two parties.

Currently, Republicans hold 218 seats in the House of Representatives, compared to 214 for the Democrats. In the Senate, the two parties hold 53 and 47 seats, respectively. To gain control of both chambers, the Democrats would need to retain their existing seats while securing an additional four seats in the House and four in the Senate.

Should President Donald Trump’s Republican Party lose control of Congress, his administration—which remains in power until his term ends on —would likely face intense political and legal challenges.
