Beyond the US-Iran deadlock: Why the Gulf must have a seat at the negotiating table

সূত্র: Blitz / বাংলাদেশ

From the report

The renewed diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between the United States and Iran have once again placed the Gulf at the center of regional geopolitics. The return of Qatari mediators to Tehran, following the presentation of a seven-day proposal for reciprocal confidence-building measures, offers a fresh opportunity to break the prolonged diplomatic deadlock. Yet the fundamental disagreements between Washington and Tehran remain unresolved, raising an important question: can another round of negotiations deliver lasting peace without giving Gulf states a meaningful role in shaping the outcome?

After eight months of conflict, the positions of the two principal parties have changed little. Iran continues to demand the lifting of the American blockade on its ports and restrictions on oil exports before addressing its nuclear program. Washington, meanwhile, insists that nuclear concessions must be part of any initial agreement. This disagreement over sequencing has repeatedly undermined diplomatic initiatives and prevented both sides from making the compromises necessary for a settlement.

Qatar’s latest proposal attempts to overcome this obstacle through a series of reciprocal commitments over seven days, allowing both parties to demonstrate goodwill without making substantial concessions upfront. The approach is potentially constructive, but its success will depend on transparency, verification and credible guarantees that neither side can exploit the process for unilateral advantage.
