Beyond the US-Iran crisis: Can regional and European powers build a new diplomatic front?

From the report
As tensions between the United States and Iran continue to keep the Middle East on edge, regional powers are increasingly recognizing that diplomacy cannot remain confined to traditional alliances or individual initiatives. The growing involvement of European countries in regional diplomatic efforts signals a potentially important shift toward a broader, more coordinated approach to managing Middle Eastern security challenges.
A significant step in this direction came on October 23, when foreign ministers from the so-called R4-Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Egypt-and the E3+1-the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy-met in Istanbul. Initiated by Ankara, the meeting brought together regional and European powers in an unprecedented diplomatic format, reflecting a shared recognition that the consequences of Middle Eastern instability extend far beyond the region.
The initiative is important not simply because of the number of participating countries but because it seeks to establish a diplomatic framework connecting regional priorities with European interests. At a time when the United States remains a central actor in the escalating confrontation with Iran, this emerging partnership could provide an additional channel for dialogue, coordination and de-escalation.
