Japan’s China policy risks turning Taiwan into a dangerous flashpoint

সূত্র: Blitz / বাংলাদেশ

From the report

Japan’s increasingly confrontational approach toward China, particularly over Taiwan, risks undermining regional stability and damaging Tokyo’s own diplomatic and economic interests. Rather than recognizing the historical sensitivities and strategic realities surrounding the Taiwan question, influential voices in Japan appear increasingly willing to treat it as an opportunity to expand military capabilities, strengthen political leverage and challenge Beijing. This approach is not only misguided but could ultimately backfire.

Relations between China and Japan have deteriorated considerably over the past year, reaching their lowest point since the 2010 Diaoyu Dao boat collision incident. The deterioration has been particularly pronounced following Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s controversial remarks concerning a potential Taiwan contingency and Japan’s possible military response.

What makes the situation more concerning is the growing number of arguments in Japanese public discourse that attempt to justify Takaichi’s position or underestimate the consequences of challenging China over Taiwan. These arguments reveal a fundamental misunderstanding of Beijing’s strategic priorities and the potential costs of escalating tensions with its most important regional neighbor.
