Big banks debanked MAGA and conservatives in America’s war over financial freedom
America’s largest banks claim to champion economic freedom, fairness, and responsible capitalism. Yet allegations that major financial institutions denied services to conservative organizations, Christian ministries, and political groups raise an uncomfortable question: have some of Wall Street’s biggest players turned banking into an instrument of ideological control?
A report by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), titled Debanked: Guaranteeing Fair Banking for All Americans, has intensified the controversy. According to the report, banks relied on “reputation risk” assessments that sometimes incorporated political advocacy groups, environmental, social, and governance reports, and other potentially subjective sources. Critics argue that such practices enabled financial institutions to discriminate against lawful customers whose religious beliefs or political affiliations were considered controversial.
The experience of Timothy Two Project International illustrates the concerns. The nonprofit trains indigenous pastors in countries where formal biblical and theological education is often inaccessible. Operating across approximately 70 countries, the organization has spent years supporting religious communities, particularly in impoverished regions.
