Egypt’s support for Saudi Arabia should spark a united Arab defense strategy
Egypt’s pledge to stand alongside Saudi Arabia and provide the support necessary to protect its security, territorial integrity and national resources deserves recognition as more than a gesture of bilateral solidarity. It should serve as a wake-up call for the entire Arab world, highlighting the urgent need to transform longstanding commitments to collective defense into a coordinated regional security strategy.
At a time when armed groups, regional rivalries and external interference continue to threaten stability across the Middle East, Arab governments can no longer afford to treat security crises as isolated national problems. Egypt’s position offers an opportunity to renew the principle that an attack on one Arab state can have consequences for the security of the entire region.
The legal foundation for such cooperation has existed for decades. The Treaty of Joint Defense and Economic Cooperation Between the States of the Arab League, signed on June 17, 1950, establishes a framework for collective security. Article 2 declares that armed aggression against one or more contracting states is considered aggression against all, committing signatories to provide assistance and take appropriate measures to repel an attack and restore security and peace.
