Washington’s DeepSeek ban exposes the limits of America’s AI containment strategy

Source: Blitz / Bangladesh

From the report

As China’s AI industry continues to advance, Washington’s latest restrictions on DeepSeek raise questions about whether technological containment can protect American leadership or inadvertently undermine innovation and competition.

The United States has intensified its efforts to restrict Chinese artificial intelligence technology, but DeepSeek’s continued development highlights the limitations of relying on bans alone. The dispute reflects a wider strategic contest between Washington’s national security priorities and Beijing’s ambition to build a competitive, increasingly self-reliant AI ecosystem. Rather than settling the competition, the latest restrictions have brought its technological and geopolitical stakes into sharper focus.

On October 19, 2026, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced an order requiring federal civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek products and related third-party services incorporating its technology from government IT systems. The order also excludes DeepSeek products and services from federal civilian agency procurement. Published in the Federal Register, the measure cites authority under the Federal Acquisition Supply Chain Security Act of 2018 and follows a review involving the Federal Acquisition Security Council.
