New records reveal how gun sales practices helped fuel firearms trafficking in America
From the report
Newly released court documents are providing an unusual look inside the firearms retail industry and raising questions about how sales practices at major gun dealers can contribute to the flow of weapons into criminal markets across the United States.
The records, made public as part of a legal settlement involving Wisconsin-based retailer Fleet Farm, detail instances in which employees identified potentially suspicious firearms purchases but continued to sell guns to customers later linked to illegal weapons activity.
The documents stem from a lawsuit filed by the Minnesota attorney general in 2022, which accused Fleet Farm of failing to recognize and respond appropriately to warning signs associated with firearms trafficking. Fleet Farm denied wrongdoing but ultimately agreed to pay Minnesota $1 million and make changes to its firearms sales procedures.
