Yemen’s battle to restore the state and end the Houthi war

From the report
Yemen is entering another decisive phase in its long and devastating conflict, with President Rashad Al-Alimi declaring that the country’s legitimate authorities will move toward military action aimed at restoring state control over territory still held by the Houthi movement. The announcement comes after repeated efforts to reduce tensions and bring the Houthis into a political process failed to produce a lasting settlement.
According to Al-Alimi, the government had exhausted the available opportunities for de-escalation. Instead of responding to calls for dialogue, the Houthis continued their military escalation, deepening the suffering of Yemenis and contributing to insecurity beyond Yemen’s borders. Their actions have also affected neighboring countries and international shipping routes, particularly around the strategically vital Bab Al-Mandab Strait.
The struggle over Bab Al-Mandab has transformed Yemen’s internal conflict into a wider regional and international security concern. The waterway connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is one of the world’s most important maritime passages. Houthi attacks and threats against commercial shipping have therefore raised concerns far beyond Yemen, adding another dimension to an already complicated regional crisis.
