Egypt’s crackdown on independent media threatens the public’s right to know

From the report

Egypt’s latest legal action against independent journalism has raised renewed concerns about press freedom, judicial independence and the government’s treatment of critical voices. A Cairo court’s decision to order the closure of the independent news outlet Mada Masr and convict its editor-in-chief, Lina Attalah, on October 27 marks another significant development in the mounting pressure on independent media in the country.

Attalah was convicted of managing an unlicensed website and briefly detained before being released. The court imposed the maximum financial penalty of 3 million Egyptian pounds, equivalent to more than $50,000, Mada Masr reported. The ruling has drawn condemnation from international press freedom organizations, which argue that the case represents a serious threat to the ability of journalists to investigate government conduct and report matters of public interest.

The legal consequences for Attalah extend beyond the latest conviction. Following her release, she learned that a separate one-year prison sentence had been issued against her in absentia in 2024 over allegations of publishing false news and operating an unlicensed website. Her lawyers have challenged that judgment, and a retrial is scheduled for November 11.
