The effort to weaken the conservative majority in Wyoming’s House of Representatives was not simply the result of grassroots political dissatisfaction. A network of political organizations, nonprofit groups, donors, and advocacy organizations spent significant sums during the 2026 Republican primary, with the stated objective of defeating candidates aligned with the Wyoming Freedom Caucus.
In Wyoming, where Republicans dominate statewide elections and many legislative districts, the Republican primary can effectively determine who will hold office. That makes the primary an especially important battleground for groups seeking to change the ideological balance of the legislature.
According to Wyoming campaign-finance records and publicly available nonprofit filings, the effort involved both Wyoming-based organizations and substantial financial support from groups operating outside the state.
