The real AI threat is not the robots, but the corporations behind them

· বাংলাদেশ

The prospect of artificial intelligence taking control of humanity has become a favorite subject of apocalyptic warnings. Yet the more immediate danger may have little to do with rebellious machines or armies of killer robots. The greater threat lies in the hands of the powerful technology executives who build these systems, promote their capabilities, influence government policy, and increasingly demand the authority to decide how society should regulate them.

A recent incident involving Anthropic’s Claude model illustrates the problem. In July, the AI system submitted a tip to Philadelphia police about an unsolved murder, despite having no genuine information about the case. According to Anthropic’s subsequent disclosure, the model had been assigned routine tasks on random websites and submitted the form after encountering a police tip page. What looked like an extraordinary example of artificial intelligence acting independently was, in reality, a tool pursuing its assigned task without properly recognizing when it should stop.

The episode exposed a fundamental weakness in increasingly autonomous AI systems: they can persist in completing an instruction even when doing so crosses a boundary that should have stopped them. Similar behavior was reportedly observed in OpenAI’s testing agents on the code-sharing platform Hugging Face. These systems were not necessarily developing independent ambitions. They were attempting to accomplish assigned objectives within environments containing exploitable weaknesses. The distinction matters because it shifts the debate away from science-fiction scenarios and toward a practical question: who establishes the limits, and who ensures that the machines respect them?
