Corporate Culture Gaps in the Textile Industry: The Tragedy in Ashulia

· Bangladesh

We still do not know why a senior merchandiser died last week; however, the account he gave his family the night before paints a picture of a workplace atmosphere thousands of textile professionals will recognize.

On the morning of 14 October, Md Jamal Uddin, who was a senior merchandiser at a garment factory in Ashulia, died following a fall from the roof of the factory building. According to the police, The Daily Star, the CCTV footage indicates that he committed suicide. However, his family disapproves of this explanation, claims that he was murdered and says the factory is hiding the truth about what took place. Although the factory authorities showed the footage to local journalists, they refused to issue an official statement.

His wife said he phoned her the night before; he said there had been trouble at the factory and that he feared the office would implicate him if he didn’t go to work.
