Rome’s push into the Arctic promises new trade opportunities

· Bangladesh

Italy is intensifying its Arctic ambitions as competition in the High North is on the rise. A recent Rome conference with Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Chief of Defence Staff General Luciano Portolano framed the polar regions as strategic priorities. Trade routes, critical resources and military activity increasingly shape European security calculations.

Italy’s updated national strategy, launched in early 2026, builds on its role as an Arctic Council observer since 2013. The document prioritizes climate protection, research, sustainable development and dialogue while giving greater weight to security. Officials now emphasize the need to monitor the region and the armed forces’ role in safeguarding national interests.

Italy’s growing Arctic ambitions could eventually create disagreements with the US over Greenland, European strategic autonomy and critical minerals. Yet Italian efforts are more likely to increase friction with Russia than to bring Rome into conflict with Washington. The underlying tension lies between Italy’s security commitments and economic interests.
