Closing the door on healthcare fraud is only the first step: Medicaid must identify its riskiest providers

· Bangladesh

The fight against waste, fraud, and abuse in America’s healthcare system has achieved an important victory, but the battle is far from over. Recent reforms by the Trump administration have significantly reduced excessive Medicare spending on skin substitutes, demonstrating that meaningful policy changes and stronger oversight can protect taxpayers. However, continuing weaknesses in state Medicaid oversight reveal a troubling reality: while one major avenue for fraud is being closed, others remain dangerously exposed.

The principle that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty applies equally to protecting public funds. Fraudsters rarely abandon their activities simply because lawmakers introduce new regulations or enforcement agencies strengthen their oversight. Instead, they adapt, identify weaknesses in the system, and move their operations elsewhere. Consequently, the government must remain proactive, strengthen accountability, and continuously identify emerging risks.

One encouraging development highlighted in the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s recent report is the dramatic reduction in Medicare spending on skin substitutes. These products, including biological, synthetic, and tissue-engineered materials, are used to treat chronic and non-healing wounds. Although they serve an important medical purpose, weaknesses in Medicare reimbursement policies created opportunities for excessive billing and potential fraud.
