Proposed Minimum Wage Structure and Productivity Improvement for Bangladesh’s RMG Industry

· Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garment (RMG) industry remains one of the key pillars of the national economy, contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings, employment generation, women’s economic empowerment, and industrial development. However, ensuring the industry’s long-term sustainability requires a balanced approach that addresses fair wages, employment generation, workforce skill development, productivity enhancement, and international competitiveness.

Increasing the minimum wage alone cannot guarantee workers’ long-term welfare. Sustainable employment opportunities, improved productivity, and the industry’s overall financial viability must also be secured.

Drawing on my extensive experience in the garment industry and involvement in BGMEA’s compliance-related activities, I would like to present several observations and policy recommendations concerning Bangladesh’s existing minimum wage structure. These proposals are intended for consideration by BGMEA, BKMEA, relevant government authorities, international buyers and brands, and other industry stakeholders.
