India after US midterms: New challenges, uncertain gains

· Bangladesh

The Democratic Party’s victory in the US midterm elections has fundamentally altered Washington’s political landscape, delivering a significant rebuke to President Donald Trump and placing new constraints on his administration. With Democrats controlling both chambers of Congress while Trump remains in the White House for the final two years of his presidency, the United States faces a period of political confrontation, legislative gridlock, and uncertainty over the direction of its domestic and foreign policies.

For India, however, the outcome presents neither an outright diplomatic victory nor an immediate economic opportunity. Although a Democratic-controlled Congress could provide a more predictable counterweight to Trump’s unconventional policymaking, it does not necessarily mean Washington will become more accommodating toward New Delhi. On trade, Russian oil purchases, immigration, and regional security, India’s interests will continue to collide with competing American priorities.

The central question is not whether the midterms weaken Trump politically, but whether that weakness changes the terms of America’s relationship with India. The answer, at least for now, appears complicated.
