Bank of Japan Poised for Another Rate Increase as Inflation Pressures Build
International Desk: The Bank of Japan (BOJ) has raised its policy interest rate to 1.25%—its highest level in 31 years—in an effort to address rising global energy prices and domestic inflationary pressures.
Moving away from its long-standing policy of ultra-low interest rates, the central bank decided to increase the rate from 1% to 1.25%. This measure became essential due to a combination of factors: volatility in global markets, surging oil prices driven by conflicts in the Middle East, and the rising cost of imported goods resulting from a weak Japanese yen.
This anticipated 25-basis-point increase would represent the central bank’s first rate adjustment in three months, signaling a significant shift away from Japan’s long-standing era of ultra-low interest rates.
