Chattogram serves as the economic heartbeat of Bangladesh, handling nearly 90% of the nation’s international maritime trade through its primary seaport and functioning as the country’s foremost industrial, logistics, and export hub. The city’s concentration of manufacturing spanning ready-made garments (RMG), steel re-rolling, ship recycling, cement production, petrochemicals, and heavy engineering underpins national revenue, supply chain stability, and foreign exchange earnings. However, decades of rapid, port-centric urban growth have saturated the urban core, causing chronic freight congestion, severe environmental pollution, uncontrolled urban sprawl, and encroachment onto fragile riverbanks, canals, and hill ecosystems.
